A Pastor once informed the congregation: “I wake up early in the morning to pray”,, this was an attempt to motivate the congregants to participate in a 24 hour prayer event. Though I agreed to pray from 2am to 3am I did not nor do I, intentionally, wake up early to pray.
I do pray, probably more than many. I rarely pray for more than ten minutes at a time, though I may pause through out the day to say a quick intercessory prayer, about a minute
1 Thessalonians 5:17 King James Version
Pray without ceasing.
To pray without ceasing, I believe, means: I don’t have to have a designated hour dedicated to prayer. To pray without ceasing means to pray as often as you feel lead to pray, don’t wait until a specific time comes and don’t stop because the time alloted is up.
Luke 2:36-37 (KJV)
36 And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity;
37 And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.
Anna was a widow that spent her time praying, I believe, as the Spirit of God lead her to. Praying was her purpose. She did not have a husband, Scripture does not indicate if she had a family or not and apparently she did not have a job.
My question is: Why do individuals who have grown children and are retired not have time to “pray without ceasing”? I know so many retired people who do not wake up until after 11AM though they were up before 8 when they had to go to work.
Anna prayed and fasted “night and day”.
There is always something to pray about and someone to pray for. It does not take long. I used to pray those long wordy prayers, I have since learned my short prayers are just as effective, if not more-so.
Matthew 6:7-8 (KJV)
7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
God knows what you need and He knows what He wants you to pray. Your rambling, “vain repetitions”, don’t impress Father God.
A prayer can last for a few seconds or a few hours. The inspiration for prayer can be triggered by what is seen on the news, what is heard from an individual or what is revealed by the Spirit of God.
Have you ever seen a homeless person. How long would it take you to pray a prayer for him or her. No, you don’t have to walk up to the person and hold their hands a go into a routine.
I have developed a habit of paying for that no one is injured when I see a car accident. I also pray against any unjust lawyers that may want to profit from the situation. I do this as I drive past the accident site.
The word retire is not in the Bible but prayer is. Retirement is an opportunity to serve God more than what you were able to do while working. Retirement is an opportunity to draw closer to God the Father through studying Scripture and praying.
Yes, some people will go in their prayer closets and pray for hours, and they are not retired! But you, if you are retired can make a list and from time to time throughout the day look at your list and ask the Holy Spirit what you should pray and then do it.
1 Thessalonians 5:25 (KJV)
25 Brethren, pray for us.
James 5:13-16 (KJV)
13 Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms.
14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.
16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
1 Timothy 2:1-3 (KJV)
1 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;
